The Ruffatti organ in Phillips Church, on the campus of Phillips Exeter Academy, was installed in July of 2004. It was dedicated the following October by concert organist Michael Kleinschmidt, who "found the organ capable of playing musically almost all kinds of repertory. I was particularly impressed by the sensitive voicing of the organ for the room: never over-bearing, but plenty rich, especially in the foundation stop tone."
In addition to the 46 ranks of pipe voices, there are five extra toe studs for the specialty stops. Three are bagpipe drones in C, F and G, which are single-note reeds with wooden resonators. The other two are a nightingale, five small pipes playing together in a pan of liquid, and thunder, comprised of five large-scale pipes tuned in non-harmonic intervals that play at the same time.
